Opportunities for Service:

The United Methodist Women (UMW) – The United Methodist Women (UMW) are an international ministry within the United Methodist Church worldwide. Our local chapter is open to women of all ages who want to make a difference in the world, and they meet bi-monthly to learn about the needs and issues of poverty in the world, engage in service projects, and raise money for international missions. Every November, they host the Parkway Fall Bazaar with a yard sale, one-worn- jewelry sale, a gumbo sale and a bake sale with thousands of dollars raised for local and international charities and missions.
The Men’s Club (United Methodist Men) – Our Men’s Club is a group of men of all ages and stages that meet periodically to do service projects for the church itself, and to do fundraisers for the support and care of the church buildings and grounds. They sponsor work days and cleanup days, and are famous for their Men’s Club BBQ fundraisers where they smoke some delicious barbecued Boston butts and rib racks to raise funds for keeping our building maintained and our A/C running in the summer!
Local Missions and Service Projects – South Brookley is committed to doing much more than just serving our own church. We find plenty of ways to serve our neighborhood and community on the Parkway. We participate every year in the Martin Luther King Day of Service on the Parkway with other churches in our neighborhood on MLK Day, and we periodically have what we call Out of the Pews, Into the World Service Sundays where we actually cancel our 11am worship service and go out to serve our community! We pick up trash and clean streets, we do painting and beautification in our local schools, do yard work for seniors, volunteer at the Salvation Army Family Shelter, and have done weather-proofing and installed insulation in needy families’ homes. We have done homework help and tutoring with children in the neighborhood, prepared breakfast for the patients of a local drug rehab clinic, and collect canned and dry food goods for our local food pantry on our monthly Two Can Sundays. There are plenty of ways you can get involved in serving the DIP community at South Brookley UMC!
Overseas Missions – Members of our church have gone on mission trips to Costa Rica, Mexico and Jamaica, and have been supported by the giving of our members. For the last few years, we have also organized the annual DIP Sausage Festival, in which the money we make selling sausage & hot dog plates goes to the United Methodist World Service Fund. This supports local charities like the Mobile Inner City Mission and the Dumas Wesley Community Center, national charities like the Black College Fund, and international ministries like the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) which goes all over the country and world to bring relief to flood victims in Texas and Florida, to the earthquake victims in Colombia and Mexico, the hurricane victims in Puerto Rico, the displaced refugees of war-torn Syria, and all around the world.
